Leaving Home Really Leaving

We are Betsey Barnett, George Meserve, and Lucas Meserve. When we are not cruising, we live in Seattle, Washington, USA, aboard our sailboat, Soul Catcher.

My name is Betsey Barnett.  In my working life, I am a professor of Multicultural Studies at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Washington, USA. I have brown hair and green eyes, I'm about 5 ' tall.  I've wanted to go cruising since I first learned to sail, in my twenties.

My name is George Meserve.  In my professional life, I am a boat builder and a facilities manager. When I'm not sleeping, I'm responsible for everything.

Lucas Meserve, Catalina Island

My name is Lucas Meserve.  I am 16 years old, a junior in High School.  I am the oldest minor cruising by two years and as such almost all of my friends are adults.  Despite the drawbacks, I would do this again without hesitation.

Soul Catcher, a Maple Leaf 42, built in 1976.  Soul Catcher is 42 feet long. She is a centerboard, semi-full keeled sloop. We added an inner forestay to allow us to use her as a cutter. Big tankage, fuel and fresh water, and a lot of interior space make her well suited to living aboard and cruising.
